Green Credentials

At Arnold, we pride ourselves in our efforts to be an eco-friendly school. Key to this is the involvement of the pupils.

WOW! Team (Eco-Warriors)

A small group of committed pupils are members of the WOW! (War On Waste) Team. The mission of these pupils is to track down waste throughout the school and to encourage eco-friendly behaviour by all. They operate, largely independent of staff involvement, in three sub-teams: Energy Saving, Recycling and Gardening.

Classrooms

Most classrooms have movement sensors so that the lights automatically switch off when the room is empty. Each classroom has a recycling sack which is regularly emptied for the Council Recycling Team to collect. All classroom teachers have signed an Eco-Pledge (designed by the WOW! Team) in which they have agreed to

  • turn off lights and projectors when not needed
  • print worksheets double-sided where possible
  • make sure orange (recycling) sacks and black (rubbish) bags are used appropriately
  • keep a supply of scrap paper for pupils' use

The WOW! Energy Saving and Recycling Teams will occasionally check that the teachers are honouring their pledges!

Recycling

In classrooms, all unused paper is recycled (or re-used as scrap paper). Elsewhere around school, we have specific recycling bins where pupils are encouraged to recycle plastic bottles, food packaging and food waste separately. The WOW! Recycling Team regularly monitor and clear the bottles and packaging and keep a tally of the bottles that have been recycled. In practice, the amount of food waste is very low so we are not in a position to send this for incineration in the same way that households can.

Willow Classroom

The WOW! Gardening Team are planting a willow circle in the Quiet Area. As willows grow very quickly, they are a very effective way of removing carbon dioxide from the air, thus offsetting some of our carbon footprint. In years to come this will grow into a shelter which can be used for small class teaching and as a space for relaxing in break times.

Solar Energy

On the roof of the hall, we have an array of solar panels, generating electricity which is fed back into the grid. In our reception area, a real-time display shows much electricity is being generated.

 WOW

This WOW logo (which appears on all our WOW posters etc.) was designed by the WOW! Team members themselves.
