Chiltern Class

Chiltern Class is a specialist provision for children with Autism which opened in January 1999. The provision provides education for six children of middle school age (9-13) and is staffed by a teacher and a Nursery Nurse, who are experienced in the needs of children with autistic spectrum disorders.

Pupils will have a Statement of Special Educational Need which will clearly identify that they have a disorder on the autistic spectrum as their prime need. All children will be assessed for their suitability against identified criteria. A panel of professionals will consider possible candidates for Chiltern Class.

Our purpose-built classroom, within the school grounds, is self-contained with its own cloakroom and separate toilets. The classroom area has been divided by furniture into clear visual areas, providing the physical structure of a specialist TEACCH provision. All the pupils are following the National Curriculum programmes of study for both core and foundation subjects.

For your child to best benefit from Chiltern class they should be able to:

1. Access the curriculum at an age appropriate level

2. Integrate into mainstream classes within their year group

3. Have mostly age appropriate language development.

Chiltern Class is not a classroom for individual teaching. Small group work and individual teaching is seen as a means to develop the social and work skills to enable successful integration to take place.
